Although autorun files are nothing more than triggers for other files or applications, they can be used to infect a system with viruses or other malicious programs. Autorun Detector focuses specifically on this file type and it prevents any attack which can be unleashed by one or more commands, within an autorun file.

The application is free and you can launch it immediately, without going through an installation process. The extracted executable is only 97.5 KB and you can run it on any computer, even from a removable drive.

The application's interface is a bit smaller than a file's properties window. It displays a series of check boxes, which you may click to enable the application for all user accounts, to run on startup, hide it in the system tray, log events and more. Additional options can be found in the lower region of the window. The software allows you to save your settings or export them as a registry file. To start monitoring for autorun files, you just need to hit the Start button, located in the same area.

You may target local partitions, removable devices and any other drive, from A to Z, on a separate window. To make the selection easier, the software provides a few options for selecting or deselecting all letters or selecting existing or non-existing drives. Another option, which you can find on the same window, can be used to detect drives which contain autorun files. While the application is monitoring your selected drives, it will display the number of detected events on the main interface.

Pros

The software can protect your system against attacks that originate from autorun files. It can monitor one or more drives and it can save events in a log file. You can force other user accounts to use Autorun Detector, even if they lack the necessary privileges.

Cons

Some users may consider Autorun Detector to be too simple. While Autorun Detector is running on your computer, your operating system will be safe from any autorun file attacks.
